As I am constantly travelling to different places around the world I am always looking at the best options for calling and using my phone. The reason I look around for the best options is purely and simply due to cost, my worst nightmare is receiving expensive telephone bills after I have returned from a trip.
On one particular trip to Dubai I simply left my data roaming switched on and used it to download my emails in the morning. I made several calls home and to my partner in Colombia but when I returned I received a telephone bill of £900 which is around 1500 dollars.
Since this trip I looked into many options and even stopped using my telephone whilst abroad simply to keep expenses down.
Depending on trip length I always purchase a local sim card from the airport on arrival and use it with a old Nokia. This allows me to make calls locally without having to pay crazy prices.
My primary telephone is my smartphone and whilst I try to use Apps on my phone I have recently discovered a free calling app that I have started to use and have had no issues whatsoever with signal and call quality.Other apps are free but the options and call quality is not the best and therefore annoys me when I need to make international calls and struggle getting through.
My advice would be for those that want to a phone app for international calling then to use Rebtel. This is a tried an tested app and one that makes my international traveling easier that it used to be.
With both smartphones and apps getting more sophisticated it is now possible to phone around the world at extremely low prices and for a international travel blogger like myself this saves me hundreds of pounds per year.
I am traveling to Brasil, Colombia, USA and hopefully many more places this year and will be using this app on all trips. I would love to hear any money saving tips that you have so please join our discussion below.
